Architectural design competition

Brig-Glis

The competition for a new school, day-care center and double sports hall in brig-glis involved designing on three levels, with constraints on volume, distance and acoustic comfort. The project made the most of green spaces and the subsoil, and also incorporated pedestrian and bicycle paths.

The competition for the construction of a new school and day-care center was held in the center of the municipality of Brig-Glis. The site was structured in three levels, which made the architectural concept very interesting. In addition to this aspect, there were a number of other constraints, including the importance of moderate massing, the distance between buildings and acoustic comfort, due to the proximity of residential areas. These elements led us to compose a harmonious architecture, in keeping with the natural gradient of the land, while meeting the requirements of the program.

The project was designed to preserve empty spaces and green areas, while making the most of the basement. The basement was transformed into a learning zone, with a large patio providing natural light. This configuration created several recreation areas where outdoor games could be set up, as well as a park planted with trees.
The western plateau is considered to be the sports zone of the space program; it houses the double sports hall and makes way for two outdoor sports fields. The eastern plateau, located in the center, houses the elementary school from ground to fourth floor.

This layout makes it easy to identify the two entities and quickly understand the premises. The after-school and day-care center are located underground, naturally lit by the large patio, strategically situated between the school and the gym. The outdoor area of the central plateau provides a meeting space and main circulation area. The third plateau, meanwhile, remains an open area with the aim of accommodating a green space and an unobstructed entrance to the lower ground floor to the north. Finally, the paths are designed to link all the spaces together and create a pedestrian and cycling zone.

The load-bearing structure, including ceilings and walls, is constructed from reinforced concrete and recycled concrete for its acoustic insulation properties. The facades are made of wood sandwich panels. Two concrete stiffening cores accompany the structure, composed mainly of concrete pillars, to ensure maximum resistance to the ground, and the roof is of timber-framed construction.
