Architectural design competition

Liddes

The competition called for the construction of a maintenance center for public services, bringing together public works, the regional fire service and the Federal Roads Office. The challenge was to identify a project capable of integrating harmoniously with the topography and scale of the site and its environment, while meeting the functional requirements of the three departments.

The village of Liddes is built on an elongated platform running parallel to the valley side, creating a veritable belvedere.
The esplanade formed by meadows and fields, although having undergone the beginnings of urbanization, remains largely intact and helps to safeguard the site's main silhouette. The aim of our research was to preserve the site's main historical and landscape features, while allowing services to function smoothly and cohabit. The concept was to integrate the building into its surroundings and create an illusion. Thanks to its green roof, the impression that the building is an integral part of the site was successfully achieved.

Our architectural project is the fruit of careful thought and in-depth analysis of the surrounding landscape.

The main silhouette of the project takes up the symbolism of the traditional roofs typical of local mazots, chalets, sheds and fruit orchards. This architectural concept allows us to create a building that evokes the essence of a Valais village and the silhouettes of the surrounding mountains, while offering a modern and innovative structure adapted to the various services hosted on this unique site. The multi-faceted green roof was designed to offer an immersive experience of relaxation in an exceptional natural setting.

People will be able to stroll through certain parts of it and enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding mountains, while breathing in fresh air and listening to the sounds of nature; several parts of the project create preserved spaces of immersive bubbles away from the noise and nuisance of traffic and access to the village.

The building is designed to comply with the Minergie-A standard, notably through the use of photovoltaic panels on the roof, making the building self-sufficient in terms of its annual energy consumption. The Commune's district heating system (CAD) will provide the main thermal production for heating the building, while solar thermal panels on the roof will supplement domestic hot water production if required.

Finally, the vegetation substrate and concrete slabs help to maintain good interior thermal inertia in heated areas, while containing any significant noise created inside the building.

We took care to choose materials - wood, metal and concrete - that harmonized with the colors and textures of the surrounding landscape, as well as with local climatic constraints.
Metal was chosen for the primary substructure of the roofs in order to reduce static heights, maintain a high load-bearing capacity and allow large static spans due to programmatic constraints.
Vertical glazed facades in wood and metal joinery, inserted between the trapezoidal roof sections, give the interior spaces a panoramic view of the surrounding natural beauty and allow direct sunlight into the premises.
